GIRL SCOUTS OF GREATER NEW YORK

Girl Scouts of Greater New York is deeply grateful to the Amplify Her Foundation for its generous grant to further leadership development programming for Troop 6000, GSGNY’s signature program bringing the supportive community of Girl Scouting to young people living in the New York City shelter system. Through the foundation’s support, Troop 6000 will provide critical opportunities for skill building, career exploration, and experiential learning to over 1,000 Girl Scouts experiencing homelessness. Thank you to Amplify Her Foundation for empowering these young New Yorkers to grow their confidence as leaders and shape their views about their own potential.
— Karen Lundgard, Interim Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of Greater New York

GRANT PURPOSE & IMPACT

Amplify Her Foundation funding will support Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s Troop 6000. Launched in 2017, Troop 6000 is a first-of-its-kind program in the nation, serving girls living in New York City’s temporary housing shelters. Troop 6000 integrates traditional Girl Scout programming and badgework with mental health and support services, empowering girls to embrace their unique identities and grow as leaders. By covering all costs - including fees, uniforms, and materials - the program ensures full accessibility for girls with limited resources. Weekly meetings, led by trained leaders, many of whom reside in shelters, foster a strong sense of community and leadership development.

For many Troop 6000 Girl Scouts, leadership development programs are unavailable in their underfunded schools, leaving them without access to meaningful skill-building and career exploration opportunities. Girl Scouts of Greater New York youth-led programs equip Troop 6000 members with essential leadership skills such as goal setting, time management, communication, collaboration, problem solving, networking, and public speaking, to shape their academic and professional futures.

In response to the growing number of migrant and asylum-seeking families arriving in New York since 2022, Girl Scouts of Greater New York has expanded Troop 6000 to welcome new members, primarily from South and Central America. The program has adapted its curriculum to address the unique challenges faced by these families, providing bilingual materials and meeting facilitation to help them adjust to their new environment. Since January 2023, Girl Scouts of Greater New York has held Girl Scout meetings entirely in Spanish at a dedicated Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center in Manhattan.

Troop 6000 currently serves over 1,400 Girl Scouts, ages 5-18, including more than 200 asylum-seeking members, throughout New York City.
