What inspired your journey as a founder and leader in this space?
As an adolescent counselor for a suicide prevention program in Brooklyn, I worked with many young Latinas experiencing depression and suicidal ideation. In this role, I became familiar with their challenges and the critical gaps in service. And I realized how personal this issue was for me. I was one of those young Latinas. I moved to New York City at 20 years old, navigating the typical immigrant experience. What drove me was this feeling of, 'I can identify with what you're going through. I understand it because I went through that.' It was unacceptable for me to see these young girls feeling hopeless because they felt they had no chance of success as an immigrant. That's why I started L.O.V.E.
As a woman, what does leadership mean to you? How would you describe your leadership style and approach?
Leadership is about inspiring others to work alongside you, not behind you. We are walking side by side as a team. It's also about ensuring that our team is in a state where everyone is fulfilled. I believe in a leadership style that prioritizes empathy, collaboration, and well-being — both my own and that of my team. First, I have to start with myself, making sure that I am well, so I can give, because if I'm not well, I am not able to give and do my best for others. It starts there, and then with the team, ensuring that together, we can offer our best to the community we serve.
What piece of advice would you give to women and girls aspiring to leadership roles?
Clarity of purpose is what drives true leaders. We all have a purpose, and we're all here for a reason. That reason becomes clearer with time, and once it is clear, your skills and talents are meant to fulfill that purpose. If you can match your education, skills, and talents with a purpose that is going to make the world a better place, that's what makes everything worthwhile.
Looking ahead, what impact do you hope to achieve through your work with your organization?
Our immediate goal is to continue to integrate our program as a required health class for girls in schools across New York City, providing young women with the support and education they need. The big dream is to open our own L.O.V.E. school. This school would be an extension of the L.O.V.E. program where mentorship is the main component. We want to create a school where the curriculum extends beyond core subjects to include mental health, reproductive health, and college and career readiness education. We want to create an enriching environment where young women can thrive, and receive the knowledge and support they need to achieve their wildest dreams.
