What inspired your journey as a founder and leader in this space?

My journey was deeply inspired by the legacy of my mother, Bella Abzug, a famous congresswoman and progressive feminist leader. After her passing in 1998, I felt compelled to honor her impactful life and work. Through my experience as a professor at Barnard College and Columbia University and years of activism and feminism, I envisioned an institute that could pass on crucial skills in leadership, debate, public speaking, and advocacy to younger generations. This vision led to the creation of The Bella Abzug Leadership Institute, an organization that not only celebrates my mother’s legacy but actively contributes to nurturing future leaders.

As a woman, what does leadership mean to you? How would you describe your leadership style and approach?

I am an activist leader who prioritizes compassion, connection, and collective action. I emulate my mother’s approach to leadership that is rooted in honesty, integrity, and the ability to resonate with people across all backgrounds. In addition to the long list of characteristics that make you a good leader, you have to get to an end. A leader’s true measure is in their ability to accomplish something; to have a tangible impact, whether it's on policy, legislation, or individual lives. And if you don't, then there's a shortness of leadership effectiveness.

What piece of advice would you give to women and girls aspiring to leadership roles?

My advice is clear: be well-prepared, active in your pursuits, and articulate your vision with both intelligence and passion. Leadership demands that you not only have ideas but that you can also inspire others to join you in action. It’s crucial to stay true to your principles, as exemplified by my mother, who never wavered in her convictions. Always aim to connect your intelligence and passion with your leadership endeavors, as this resonance is key to achieving meaningful change.

Looking ahead, what impact do you hope to achieve through your work with your organization?

Looking forward, my ambition is to significantly expand our program's reach and impact, potentially starting a new branch in California and beyond. With over 4,500 trainees already, our goal is not just to increase numbers but to deepen our program's quality and breadth. We aim to continue providing exceptional programs that empower young women, foster leadership, and encourage active participation in civic life. The vision is to build a larger, more inclusive platform that can address the diverse needs of young women across the country, inspiring them to lead with conviction, compassion, and courage.
